So I thought it had all ground to a halt after Tom got his taste for power, so I started emailing my supervisor to explain why I haven't handed in my work yet (she has a permanent residence and will never understand). Turns out I hadn't refreshed the ballot order and WE ARE MOVING.
Note should go to Terri Ha and Tony Lopez, the first brave enough to stray from college. Us lower down the ballot may utilise a small colony in the external Corpus outposts, and we must pay tribute to these brave explorers who dared venture without a friendship group already in place. It is a viable possibility that the entirety of third year could now shun T-Street and (say) reclaim Newnham. This would leave Tony without a friend in the world. I'm not saying that we should do that, nor am I saying that it would be really funny, nor am I saying that we should Totally do that, I'm just saying think about the tremors he must be feeling. Show your gratitude. Buy him a pint. Or I dunno. Buy him a room not in T-Street.

If anyone's wondering what was going on during the long hard road of Tom Davidson's balloting, here we see him literally split-screening database, ballot order, several room picks and popular agony aunt column "Bettie's Ballot Bonanza".
What good has this matrix-like setup done you Tom? PS it's done him fuck all he picked his first choice from the beginning PPS I don't care if he's apologised A statement from Thomas Davidson :
"Despite the ballot being more than 90 minutes ahead of schedule at a very early stage I understand it was completely unreasonable of me to take 13 whole minutes to make my decision. The influx of messages into my Facebook inbox containing images of hissing snakes and death threats were all justified and I'm sorry for the distress I caused." Thomas Davidson,
With long shortlist of twelve rooms, Guarantees success. Guiseppe's doing a year abroad? Not relevant but we had no idea. Stay tuned for more musings.
Suspiciously, a slight delay as Alex Gunasekera waits until precisely five minutes before the end of the hour (i.e. for his lecture to finish #bless). LECTURES ON ROOM BALLOT DAY ALEX?!?!?!
Anyway, composure regained, we have an exclusive interview with Corpus' smallest inhabitant and the only person who could fit in D7b last year: Elena "Rasta" Rastorgueva. Transcript as follows: "I will miss it dearly And am planning to relocate sideways into D8" Dream big, Elena. With the Wakeling wedge finally shifted, the lights are on Thoma and he starts to feel the heat. Responding in the only way he knows, he elects to email everyone above him in the room ballot to ask their preferences again, despite them now having picked and publicly published their choices. Unsatisfied with this crop of new information, he elects to email every single person lower than him on the ballot as well.
Don't panic, Benji. We seem to have encountered a technical problem, with the ballot grinding to a halt at the first scientist on the list, Joe "Putting the Camp in Campanology" Wakeling. He's probably gone to get his hair cut again. Corpus watches Joe, Corpus waits.
Jonny French once read a limerick.
To be honest, it was a slight gimmick. Seb Johns' review For mighty N2 Left no doubt which room French would pick Correspondents watched with baited breath as Angus Hammond pressed the big red button. And so it began again. Correspondents then realised they had left their laptop in the library so had no means of reporting. And so it began again again.
A quick opening flurry from Lizzie Merson (inside info tells us she had a ballot-induced nightmare last night and has been in the library since 7.30 staring at Y11. That inside info is Lizzie Merson) drew no immediate surprises as the colonisation of Y begins. Every year, one whole constituent college of the University of Cambridge grinds to a halt to watch each other pick their rooms for next year.
Great epics have been written about this process. From 10am tomorrow, it shall begin again! To liven it up, we will be offering up sage commentary, including awards for: 'Greatest Room Review' For those with the Great 21st Century novel waiting to escape 'Shittest Room Review' Why did you even bother? 'Luddite award' For holding up human progress (of the ballot) 'Canessa Prize' For first onto the reserve list. Bonus points if in the top 20 of their ballot anyway 'Most Predictable' for choosing their own room again 'Absolute Steal' for unexpectedly getting a great room 'Procrastiballoting' for wasting time following the ballot, especially if you are a third year. Any submissions for the above will be gratefully received- just hit the 'contact' button in the top right. Top TIps Y staircase has got to go early. Y? Well, the only place to have the holy trinity of En suites, hobs/ovens and being in college, this surely is the Mayfair of the Corpus monopoly board and is surprisingly cheap. With 4 rooms out for prizes and a further few taken out for special considerations, this will go like hot cakes. Will it make it out of the top 10 of the third year ballot? Lets wait and see. Old court will probably be next to go. where will the freshers pick though? Newnham normally goes quickly as a 2nd year ghetto, but last year it dragged on and on with its dubious charms of woodlice, darkness and damp not enticing in the students. Botolph to be the last to go. Close one with benet, but Bene't is fresherdom and is being refurbished over summer so is likely to be filled up. Let us know your thoughts! In an endeavour to get hits from the start (unlike last year*), we're planning to start the blog now! Get hyped.
With our enterprising Vice President/GAF officer taking matters into his own hands alongside the refurbishment of College, the room ballot runs without infamous rooms like D7b** and the Piccadilly Line extension C1***. While this means our writers will actually have to come up with some fresh material, we have just 145 people on the ballot, the lowest ever in documented history, so they don't have to come up with that much of it. For a start, may I point you towards the lovely tradition of I6 room reviews: http://jcr.corpus.cam.ac.uk/ballot/room/48 Let the room ballot/fight-to-the-death begin. * http://roomballot.weebly.com/blog/were-back ** Though the current occupant would defend it to its death *** Shoutout (i.e. credits) to the Pelican't |
